Recognised government bodies such as Standards Australia, US Department of Transportation (DOT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require that a product meet certain specifications and conformance methodologies in order to be registered or certified.
To confidently select a breathalyser, it is important to be aware of these certifications as they ensure the quality and consistency of a breathalyser, and the delivery of accurate BAC readings.
For better performance and longer product life, the breathalyser should be recalibrated as required and the devices’ sensor should be replaced according to manufacturer guidelines.
There are three types of alcohol sensor technologies to measure BAC:
1. Semiconductor Sensor Standard Models - AL2500 & AlcoSense Elite
The breathalysers with the most value for money, with accuracy in BAC
readings to +/- 0.01. An
ideal gift or promotional item.
2. Semiconductor Sensor Professional Model - AL6000Pro
A Standards Australia approved device to test deep-lung air samples with sensor replacement required every 400-500 uses. The AL6000Pro can be used for BAC measurement by drivers, schools, medical industry professionals or as a personal device.
3. Fuel Cell Sensor - AlcoSense Precision Breathalyser
The best sensor available on the market, with accuracy in BAC readings to three decimal places. No sensor replacement required, and calibration is recommended every 12 months. The breathalysers with the fuel cell sensor are designed for hundreds of uses daily, and are utilised by police, as well as medical, transport, aviation and mining industries.

BREATHALYSER CARE
Taking proper care of your breathalyser includes:
- Waiting 20 minutes after drinking before blowing into the device.
- Always using a mouthpiece.
- Using only ALKALINE BATTERIES.
- Replacing batteries when the "battery low" signal appears.
- For AL6000Pro: blowing gently until the beep stops.
- Never sharing your beathalyser with other people.
- When not in use, keeping the device in its pouch and removing batteries.
- Keeping the device away from the moisture or water.

BAC stands for Blood Alcohol Concentration and it is measured by a simple breath
test procedure. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit is 0.05% and that
allows for 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
Most people find it difficult to gauge their own blood alcohol level as there
a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration. A person’s
BAC levels are influenced by body weight, the type and quantity of alcohol consumed,
the amount of time over which alcohol is consumed, fitness levels, general health,
and amount of food eaten in that time.
Current government laws relating to driving and alcohol consumption vary for
different licence holders:
- Learner (L-platers) and Provisional Licence (P-platers): 0.00% BAC
- Professionals Drivers of heavy trucks, buses, trains and trams: 0.00% BAC
- Open Licence Holder: below 0.05% BAC
Men: No more than two standard drinks in the first hour and
one standard drink each hour after.
Women: No more than one standard drink each hour.
PLEASE NOTE: It takes the liver about one hour to process one standard drink
of alcohol. There is a possibility after a heavy night's drinking that a person's
BAC level will still be over 0.05% the following morning. BAC cannot be reduced
by having coffee, cold showers, vomiting or exercise. There are heavy penalties
for drink driving and they include fines, disqualification for a period of time
and imprisonment.
However most importantly do not risk your life or someone else's. Do not drink
and drive!
However if you do drink and need to drive, obtain a breathalyser and check
your BAC level. It is simple, easy and fast to do the test.

Breathalysers usually need ongoing recalibration in order to give accurate Blood Alcohol
Concentration (BAC) readings. BAC test data is stored in the sensor's memory,
however over time stored data tends to lose accuracy as more tests are conducted
and sensor itself deteriorates over time. Recalibration refreshes the sensor’s
memory, as it restores the accuracy of the BAC readings by enabling the breathalyser
the clarity to acquire better accuracy of readings.
AlcoScan AL2500 Breathalyser
- Requires calibration every 6 months for a standard user (4-5 uses per week)
- Heavier users it is recomended 3-6 months.
- Calibration costs $10.00 (does not include return post charges)
Andatech AL6000Pro Breathalyser
- Requires device calibration after every 150 uses or every 6 months
- The sensor should be replaced after every 500 uses or once a year (sensor
replacement cost included in calibration)
- Calibration costs $25 (does not inlcude return post charges)
Alcosense® Precision Breathalyser
- Calibration recommended every year. Sensor replacement not required (fuel
cell breathalyser)
- Calibration costs $35 (does not include return post charges)
